Types of Paint & Finishes for Different Surfaces

A new paint job can give your home a fresh look and protect surfaces.

Paint finish refers to the amount of light that reflects off a painted surface after it’s dry. Not only does the finish affect how shiny the paint is when it’s dry, but it also affects the surface durability of the paint, how easy it is to clean, and how the final colour will look.

While a good paint job requires a good painting technique, the right material also plays a crucial role in the final results. With hundreds of paint colours, types, and finishes, it can be confusing trying to figure out which one suits your needs the most.

Before you break out the brushes and rollers, you’ll need to know which finish is the best choice for your project.

Different Types of Paint

The type of paint you choose will highly depend on the area you’ll be working in. For example, if you’re painting in a high-traffic area, it’s best to choose a material that dries quickly.

One of the biggest advantages of oil paint is that it can be used on practically any surface. Not only does it offer great durability and a rich finish, but has great water-resistant abilities as well. However, it takes a bit longer to dry and emits potentially harmful fumes.

Water-based paint, on the other hand, is very easy to use and dries quickly. It’s also resistant to cracking, won’t change colour when exposed to sunlight, and has low VOCs. This is great if you’re in a time crunch and can’t leave the room empty for a couple of days.

As for exterior paints, enamel paint is a great option for surfaces that need to withstand tough conditions such as rain and wind. It covers minor imperfections, withstands damage, and sticks well on dirty surfaces.

Types of Wall Finishes

There are five different finish and sheen options to choose from, each one categorized by its reflectiveness.

While matte finishes are the least popular option, some will prefer to use them in low-traffic areas of the home. When fully dry, they will have the least amount of shine and typically require fewer coats to cover imperfections.

Satin paint is quite similar to the matte option though it gives off a velvety and smooth look. This material is quite durable and can be washed if needed.

Eggshell finishes are the most popular as they strike a perfect balance between high gloss and matte. If you’re looking for a lower-level sheen that is durable and easy to clean, then eggshell finish paint is the most suitable option for you.

Both semi-gloss and high gloss finishes are all about a sleek, glossy appearance. While these sheens can look glamorous, they can be incredibly hard to pull off. If you’re thinking of using semi or high gloss, it’s best to have a professional take care of the job as any tiny imperfection will show.
